Hello, my name is Cameron and I am going to discuss one of the most popular Call Of Duty games; Call Of Duty Modern Warfare. This was the fourth instalment in the Call Of Duty series which made Call Of Duty what it is today, one of the best-selling gaming franchises in the gaming world. It is an FPS action (and has been classed as an adventure for some awards) series. Recently, it has been remastered along with the new Call Of Duty and is being played by both old Call Of Duty players and the new ones. It was the game that defined Call Of Duty and made the series stand out against competitors such as Medal Of Honor and Battlefield. Throughout this documentary, I will discuss my opinions as well as opinions from the critics on the game, how successful the game was in terms of marketing and how it stood out from the crowd back in 2007.
Call Of Duty has been made by many developers as well as published by various companies. Call Of Duty 4 was developed by Infinity Ward, Raven Software (who were in charge of the remastered version), Aspyr media and n-space. However, the most well known from these developers are Infinity Ward and Raven Software due to their dedication in the franchise. Raven Software helped make the remastered version of Modern Warfare while Infinity Ward worked on Infinite Warfare. Throughout Call Of Duty, we have seen Raven Software working Infinity Ward to bring the best for the community and their hard work and dedication has been shown in their games multiple times. Call Of Duty 4 was published by both Activision and Square Enix Holdings, although Activision has stayed publishing the Call Of Duty games since release and owning both Treyarch and Infinity Ward. As well as this the remastered version was only published by Activision which is not uncommon in the latest games of the Call Of Duty franchise.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare had similar features to its predecessors but because the reason Call of Duty was introduced (which was to compete with Medal Of Honor) it didn’t borrow from other FPS because ti wanted to be unique. It had its own mechanics and the mission in the campaign was varied from stealth across to all out warfare. The multiplayer was unique compared to Medal Of Honor as well due to features and mechanics, for example, night vision goggles.
Call Of Duty Modern Warfare is by far one of the most popular Call Of Duty games for many reasons. First of all, it sold 7 million copies worldwide, making it the best game selling game in 2007. It also featured a good multiplayer which differentiated itself from other FPS games of the time such as Medal Of Honor. The online featured a variety of maps in different weather conditions, perk system for the players and a huge variety of weapons. It also introduced killstreaks for the first time in multiplayer. It won many awards as well, these were; VGX award for best shooter, VGX award for a best military game, BAFTA games award for gameplay, BAFTA for best story and characters, Interactive Achievement Award for overall game of the year (2008). It was also nominated for a variety of awards such as BAFTA best use of audio, BAFTA for artistic achievement, BAFTA best action and adventure game, BAFTA best multiplayer, BAFTA for best game, Golden Trailer award for the best game trailer, IMFCA award a best original score for a game. Many of these awards that they were nominated for (and also won) were from the years 2007-2009, showing that Call Of Duty 4 was a fantastic game because it was receiving awards 2 years after its release. Furthermore, Infinite Warfare sold 1.8 million copies, topping the UK gaming charts for the release week, a large majority of these copies were the Legacy or Legacy Pro editions which contained remastered version of Modern Warfare, showing us that the game is still popular now and it also represents the idea that the remastered version of Modern Warfare boosted sales for Infinite Warfare.
Personally, I believe that both the original and remastered versions of Modern Warfare are fantastic games, it featured the hardest level in the Call Of Duty franchise and the most iconic level in the franchise that is loved by everyone and anyone. The multiplayer also gave a fantastic experience which was both fun and competitive. The plot for the game was unbelievable, it was one of the best campaigns in the franchise and should be played by everyone, even if you haven't played Call Of Duty before. As well as this the campaign introduced some of the best characters that we have connected with for years through the Modern Warfare series, In my opinion, the best mission in this game is All Ghillied Up due to its iconic gameplay where you sneak through Chernobyl and multiple choices whether you kill or leave an enemy. Also, it gave an eerie fell to the mission seeing abandoned buildings and having moments where you would hear disembodied voices of children playing as if you were listening to the past. However, I enjoy this mission a lot more in the remastered edition due to the Paradox trophy. This is acquired by killing Makarov in the car before Zachaev gets in the car. With Makarov dead in the original Modern Warfare, this eliminates most of MW2 and MW3 due to him being an enemy in both of the games.
Critics also love Modern Warfare, IGN rated it a 9.4/10- saying the title “delivered an addictive and customizable gameplay”, 9/10 by trusted reviews, 94% by Metacritic, 7/10 by GameSpot, 9.2/10 by the community of IGN. Also, Official PlayStation Magazine rated it 10/10 and ranked it as the second best PS3 game on the market. However, the remastered version did not receive such high praise compared to the original, IGN only rating it an 8.5/10 saying “Modern Warfare is no longer a modern shooter” and the community giving it an 8.3, Metacritic giving it an 82/100, and trusted reviews giving it 3.5/5 stars. But what happened for the remastered version to become lower rated when it is basically the same game? That is a question which I think will never be fully answered but did Infinite Warfare have an effect on the ratings?
Now we will move onto some interviews from members of the public…
Thank you for watching and I hope you are now more informed about Modern Warfare. If you haven’t played this before then I recommend it! Now I will end the documentary with this fantastic scene.
